    A new six-degree-of-freedom force-reflecting hand controller for space telerobotics

    A new 6 degree of freedom universal Force Reflecting Hand Controller (FRHC) was designed for use as the man-machine interface in teleoperated and telerobotic flight systems. The features of this new design include highly intuitive operation, excellent kinesthetic feedback, high fidelity force/torque feedback, a kinematically simple structure, mechanically decoupled motion in all 6 DOF, good back-drivability, and zero backlash. In addition, the new design has a much larger work envelope, smaller stowage volume, greater stiffness and responsiveness, and better overlap of the human operator's range of motion than do previous designs. The utility and basic operation of a new, flight prototype FRHC called the Model X is briefly discussed. The design heritage, general design goals, and design implementation of this advanced new generation of FRHCs are presented, followed by a discussion of basic features and the results of initial testing

    Experimental Measurements of Fuel Savings During Aircraft Wake Surfing

    The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Armstrong Flight Research Center (Edwards, California) completed a series of research flights to better understand the challenges of aircraft wake surfing using civilian airplanes and commercial avionics. The research flights sought to demonstrate significant fuel savings by a pair of business jets engaged in automated wake surfing using commercial off-the-shelf avionics to the fullest extent possible, including a 1090-MHz Automatic Dependent Surveillance - Broadcast (ADS-B) data link. A NASA Gulfstream C-20A airplane (Gulfstream Aerospace, Savannah, Georgia) was flown as the trail airplane within the wake of a NASA Gulfstream III (G-III) airplane.     Exploring the Risks of Children Engaging with Programmable IoT

    This paper reports on IoT4Kids, a study exploring the privacy, security and safety implications of children programming the Internet of Things. The study focuses on the BBC micro:bit as one device that allows children to create rudimentary IoT devices. Prior publications have described the first stage of this study, which involved workshops with child participants. This paper instead focuses on the second stage of the project, which involved conducting key informant interviews with representatives from our project partners in order to understand the risks children face with interacting with programmable IoT devices. We describe themes that emerged from these interviews, along with implications for the study and for future work in this area

    Portable Load Measurement Device for Use During ARED Exercise on ISS

    The Advanced Resistive Exercise Device (ARED) (Fig.1) is unique countermeasure hardware available to crewmembers aboard the International Space Station (ISS) used for resistance exercise training to protect against bone and muscle loss during long duration space missions. ARED instrumentation system was designed to measure and record exercise load data, but: - Reliably accurate data has not been available due to a defective force platform. - No ARED data has been recorded since mid-2011 due to failures in the instrumentation power system. ARED load data supports on-going HRP funded research, and is available to extramural researchers through LSDA-Repository. Astronaut Strength, Conditioning, and Rehabilitation specialists (ASCRs) use ARED data to track training progress and advance exercise prescriptions. ARED load data is necessary to fulfill medical requirements. HRP directed task intends to reduce to program risk (HRP IRMA Risk 1735), and evaluate the XSENS ForceShoeTM as a means of obtaining ARED load data during exercise sessions. The XSENS ForceShoes"TM" will fly as a hardware demonstration to ISS in May 2014 (39S). Additional portable load monitoring devices (PLMDs) are under evaluation in the ExPC Lab. PLMDs are favored over platform redesign as they support future exploration needs
